Key activities and programs to prevent violence against women
Gender equity and prevention of violence against women are core business for all five rural, four metropolitan and three state-wide Victorian women’s health services.
An overview is provided below of the types of activities and actions that Victorian women’s health services deliver to prevent violence against women.
Programs and activities vary according to regional and state-wide needs at any given time, to ensure their relevance and effectiveness. All women’s health services' activities, resources and training packages are based on the latest evidence on prevention of violence against women.
Regional strategies and action plans
Regional strategies and action plans are a process where communities makes decisions together about how they can act to prevent violence against women. This process is formalised through the development of an agreed regional strategy or action plan – which can involve a wide range of community activities. This plan is then collectively implemented and evaluated.
All regional women’s health services develop and deliver regional strategies and/or action plans and these act as a central point around which all other work is planned.

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence
16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign (the 16 Days campaign) is an annual global event supported by the United Nations that aims to draw community and government attention to the gendered violence that women and girls experience.
The 16 Days starts on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, International Human Rights Day.
Women’s health services across Victoria participate in this campaign and support communities to deliver and host events and activities during this period, to draw attention to violence against women.
Many communities will participate in the Walk Against Family Violence on 25 November, or will host White Ribbon Day activities (White Ribbon Day is held on the same day and seeks to draw attention to men’s role in preventing violence against women).
Community programs and activities
In addition to 16 Days of Activism, women’s health services develop and deliver a range of other community programs and activities that focus on gender equity and prevention of violence against women – regionally and state-wide. These include events, campaigns and actions developed for and with the community.
Within regions, these programs will arise from the regional strategy or plan (see above). State-wide services will also deliver projects needed at a broader level and which may support regional services in the work they are doing.
These programs and activities might focus on a specific issue, such as addressing sexist language, gender equitable parenting, or respectful relationships. They can also focus on specific places or groups in the community, such as schools and education groups, local government, local media, a single suburb, or a specific community group such as young mothers or a faith group.
Training packages on gender equity and prevention of violence against women
Training packages on gender equity and prevention of violence against women are delivered by all women’s health services, regionally and at a statewide level.
Most training is fee-for-service and can include standardised or accredited training packages, and some services also deliver tailored presentations and workshops. Training can be delivered to community groups, organisations and services, local government, policing and justice, and business groups.
Common training includes:
- Gender equity or violence against women training – outlining the evidence and what is needed to prevent violence against women
- Bystander training – outlining ways to safely and effectively take an active role against harmful attitudes and behaviours that can support violence against women
- Workplace training – Take A Stand, MATE and AMP programs are common training modules on the effective actions workplaces can take to prevent violence against women.
Support programs for organisational change
As well as training packages, many women’s health services also provide tailored one-on-one support packages to organisations and businesses in reviewing and making changes to internal processes and policies to support gender equity and prevention of violence against women.
Most organisational change programs are fee-for-service and can include carrying out gender audits of your workplace, and implementation and monitoring of workplace programs, policy and organisational change.
Print, audio, video and online resources
Development of printed, audio, video and online resources is part of all women’s health services' work in preventing violence against women. Some have a state-wide focus, while others will consider particular geographic or community groups.
This includes factsheets, guidelines for best practice work, videos on key facts or how to get involved in local action, infographics to explain complex ideas or statistics, and comprehensive training guides and materials. Resources can be developed for the general community to take action on violence against women, or can be targeted at organisations to support them to make changes internally.
Community of Practice networks
A community of practice is a network of people, in any given field or area of interest, who regularly meet online or in person to share information, ideas and support best practice in their work. Women’s health services run and participate in various communities of practice on the issue of prevention of violence against women.
This includes a statewide community of practice for prevention of violence against women attended by all 12 Victorian women’s health services. This community of practice meets quarterly with the aim of sharing ideas and fostering consistent, best practice work across Victoria. It includes discussion on the latest research and publications, government policy and arising practice issues.
Regional communities of practice are hosted by regional women’s health services. These can include staff from partner organisations across the region who are leading or contributing to prevention of violence against women actions. They can also include community groups.
